There seems to be intense debate in the newspapers about the way the shooting of Indian fishermen by the crew of the infamous Italian ship Enrica Lexie. At the moment the police are examining the weapons seized from the ship and it seems that the ship has been nicely loaded with enough ammunition. That the Indian fishermen off Kerala's coast proved such an easy target remains a bigger mystery.
But the truth is even more simpler perhaps. The Italian mindset hasn't changed and perhaps the whole of Europe too as far as the colonial factor is concerned. That is still part of their DNA as they feel it is their right to shoot down innocent Indians at our own yard.
But the real fact is that these ships and its crew have been biting their own lips due to the economic downturn in their countries. What used to be a cozy way of exploitation of resources both within their countries and abroad has spiraled into nothing. Most of them are in the verge of unemployment and facing their worst future. This is an issue that has perhaps been raked up or perhaps the Italian crew became trigger happy only due to the growing discontent in these countries where the government has been driven by a serious of austerity measures. The outrage is giving vent to feelings and emotions that is being seen in coastal areas far from their own. Indian fishermen can survive by eating a few fishes but not the Italian people as their media too has come out with open support to these crews. The Italian people these days would need more than just pizzas to eat.
The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa must be leaning slightly more than usual it is stated in some quarters. I would like to state here that their whole economy has tilted 180 degrees flat on the ground. They would need to think even much beyond their colonial mindset.
